Malaria outbreak claims 41 lives in Likuangole County

The authorities in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) have reported a malaria outbreak in Likuangole County, with over 250 cases, including 41 deaths, registered in the last two weeks amidst a shortage of essential drugs.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Oleyo Akwer Nyalus, the GPAA Information minister, said 36 infants were among those who succumbed to the parasitic disease and that health intervention was needed to rescue the situation.

“There is an unfortunate situation in Likuangole County. A malaria outbreak there has infected more than 250 people and claimed 41 lives including 36 children,” he said. “Of the deaths, five occurred within a health facility in the county headquarters.”

“A health partner is operating in Likuangole but I believe they are overwhelmed by this huge outbreak, so, we appeal for assistance to take care of this situation,” Akwer added.
