Malaria cases are increasing among children and women in the town of Aweil in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state due to the advent of the rainy season, a medical doctor said.
Reec Mathok Diing, the hospital director told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the rainy season has exacerbated the spread of malaria, saying the health facility registers more than 200 cases of malaria among children and pregnant women daily.
“We register more than 200 malaria cases daily in the outpatient department, public ward and maternity,” said Diing.
The medical officer urged the national government and health partners to supply the hospital with more anti-malarial drugs to treat the patients.
Amani James, a patient who visited Aweil hospital, said she was experiencing malaria symptoms and that she came to the health facility for a medical check-up.
“I came for a medical check-up because I am are experiencing malaria symptoms. I came to the hospital four times because of malaria,’’ she concluded.
Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.
