Local authorities in Malakal town of Upper Nile State have imposed an indefinite night curfew as part of the measures to help curb insecurity.
Over the last couple of months, the security situation has deteriorated. At the beginning of the month, two people including an SSPDF general were gunned down in the town.
Ajak Wer, the Secretary-General for Upper Nile State government told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that they imposed a night curfew from last week to tackle the recurring incidents of insecurity.
“Right away from the day of the killings, we issued the 7:30 pm to 6 am curfew. This will help our security agents take control of the town,” Wer said.
He added, “Now, the curfew is open. It will be lifted only if the security committee evaluates the situation and recommends so.”
Major Nyok Bol, the acting state police commissioner, said they have been implementing the curfew order without violations by the residents of Malakal since last week.
“Residents are cooperating with us. But in case of anyone delays, we take a statement from them and escort them to their respective places,” he said.
The police officer said that Malakal has been calm since November 4.
