Malakal camp leader: Food expensive after route closed to Wau Shilluk

Food prices have risin in the Malakal protection camp after closure of the route to Wau Shilluk located acros the Nile, according to displaced people in the camp.

The camp residents blame government soldiers for cutting off the river route to Wau Shilluk. Recently, government soldiers reportedly opened fire on a relief convoy as it was crossing the river to Wau Shilluk, though nobody was reported to be hurt. However, the government has accused General Johnson Olony's forces of cutting off the river from Renk southward.

Aban Yor, a camp leader, told Radio Tamazuj that a sack of sugar of 10 kg has reached 500 SSP and one kilo of meat is 140 SSP, while there is scarcity of cooking oil in the market of the camp.

“Food prices are rising drastically inside the camp because we have no access to bring food to the camp due to the closure of the road,” said Yor.

After closure of the route to Wau Shilluk, Yor said there are some women who are bringing food from the town to the camp but it is not enough to meet their needs.
