Authorities in South Sudan’s Maiwut State have paid 760,000 Ethiopian Birr (an equivalent of $26,000) as blood money to the family of a 12 year old girl who was killed in a car accident in March.
Last month, a court in Ethiopia’s Gambella region fined Governor Bol Ruach Rom in connection with an incident in which a young girl was crushed to death by a car he was travelling in.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday from Gambella, Maiwut information minister Baruach Uluch Akolaton said a delegation of six officials headed by the speaker of the state assembly Chuol Dim Kiir are in Gambella to pay compensation for the accident.
“We come as the delegation to pay the fines ordered by the court and we paid 760,000 Ethiopian birr to the family in the presence of police authority in Gambella. We have completed all the payment,” he said.
He added, “We will pay a visit to the victim’s family as the delegation to apologize and let them know that it was an accident not something planned by Maiwut State against Ethiopia’s national,” he explained.
Baruach stated that the delegation have been in Gambella since Sunday last week.
