Authorities in Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State have initiated dialogue with officials in Uganda’s Lamwo district over cross border relations, following high tensions last month.
South Sudanese local authorities last month accused Ugandan soldiers of overrunning Ngom-Oromo checkpoint during a land dispute between communities living along the border.
Magwi County Commissioner Ben Kingston Lotuk told Radio Miraya yesterday that discussions are being held with Ugandan local authorities on the other side of the border to restore property allegedly stolen during the recent unrest and to encourage further dialogue.
“During that incident there were some properties that were lost. And some of those properties are going be handed back to the rightful owners on 29th of this month and that is the scheduled time that the authorities of the state level and county level will meet at Ngom-Oromo,” said Ben.
He added, “That will be one of the agenda and the second and the main agenda is the launching of dialogue meeting between the two countries specifically between the RDC [Resident District Commissioner] and the county authorities here in South Sudan.”
Radio Miraya further reported that a first meeting between authorities of Magwi County and Ugandan officials took place last Wednesday in Uganda’s Lamwo district.
