Machar urges new AU leadership to ensure peace in South Sudan

South Sudan’s former vice president and opposition leader Riek Machar has urged the newly elected Chairperson of the African Union, President Alpha Conde of the Republic of Guinea, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chadian foreign affairs minister to put more attention to the resolution of South Sudan conflict.

In two separate congratulatory messages to the new African Union leadership, Machar encouraged the two leaders to take this opportunity to put more attention to the resolution of South Sudan conflict, saying the East African regional bloc IGAD has voluntarily relinquished its responsibility to the African Union.

“It is our hope that during your tenure, you will give more attention to the resolution of the renewed conflict in South Sudan particularly now that IGAD has relinquished this responsibility to the African Union,” party reads the congratulatory message.

The rebel leader said he will cooperate with the new African Union leadership and the AU High Representative for South Sudan Alpha Oumar Konare.

“We will cooperate with your office and the AU High Representative for South Sudan, former President Alpha Oumar Konare to resolve this conflict. We want peace in South Sudan,” said Machar.
