Machar to meet Bashir over peace implementation in South Sudan

South Sudan armed opposition leader Riek Machar plans to meet Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir before he leaves Khartoum, a senior SPLM-IO official said.

Sebit Magok, head of the SPLM-IO committee for local government, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the armed opposition leader Riek Machar will meet President Bashir, saying Machar wants to thank the Sudanese leader for accommodating him in Khartoum for medical treatment.

Magok pointed out that the two leaders will also discuss peace implementation in South Sudan. “He will meet with the Sudanese president to thank him for what his country has done by evacuating him to Khartoum and taking care of him,” said Magok.

“Machar will also discuss with al-Bashir the outcomes of the IGAD summit in August,” he added.

The opposition official noted that Machar will travel to a neighbouring country soon. However, he did give further details on the matter.

Separately, Sebit Magok said that an SPLM-IO delegation headed by Henry Odwar had arrived in the United States to discuss the current situation in South Sudan.
