South Sudanese rebel leader Riek Machar says his troops have reverted to guerrilla warfare to fight against Kiir’s government in different parts of the Equatoria region.
In an interview with Radio Tamazuj from his residence in South Africa on Sunday, Machar denied government claims that his forces are targeting civilians. He explained that the SPLA forces are getting their food and shelter from citizens.
“We have forces in greater Equatoria, but we are not targeting any civilians or any citizens, because we are fighting on the streets in Equatoria,”he said.”Guerrilla warfare depends on the citizens in many things like food, shelter and information, that’s why we will not target any citizen, he added.
Instead, the armed opposition leader accused government forces of targeting innocent civilians in deferent parts of the country.
Machar pointed out that the signed peace agreement is dead, saying all members of his group on the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) were withdrawn, while slamming the oversight body for trying to implement the peace agreement unilaterally.
“JMEC is not present anymore, and is being used by the government in Juba, JMEC is not functioning, and we have withdrawn all our representatives involved in the implementation of the peace agreement,” said Machar.
