Sudan has proposed that during revitalization of the 2015 peace deal, South Sudanese rebel leader Riek Machar, currently exiled in South Africa, may be relocated to Djibouti, according to a leaked IGAD report.
According to the report obtained by Radio Tamazuj, Machar during his recent meeting with Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Sudan and Ethiopia in South Africa, blamed Sudan for orchestrating his exile in South Africa.
The South Sudanese opposition leader, according to the report, was adamant during the meeting saying he cannot negotiate peace revitalization while under house arrest.
The report also pointed out that President Salva Kiir said during his recent meeting with foreign ministers of IGAD countries in Juba that he will no longer guarantee Riek Machar’s safely if he were to relocate to South Sudan.
The East Africa's security and trading bloc IGAD explained in its report that the revitalization process was initiated to create ceasefire, lay the ground for peaceful elections and bring an end to the transition in a smooth and acceptable manner in South Sudan.
South Sudan’s former First Vice President turned rebel leader is being held in South Africa to prevent him from going back to his country.
The decision was reportedly reached by IGAD countries in order to keep him away in the hope of preventing fighting in South Sudan.
South Sudan’s four-year civil war has Killed tens of thousands of people and left half of the nation’s population in need of humanitarian aid and caused one of the world’s worst refugee crises.
