Ma’alia tribe demands new peace deal with Rizeigat in East Darfur

A traditional leader of the Ma’alia tribe in Sudan’s East Darfur has demanded a new peace agreement with their neighbouring Rizeigat community, saying previous agreements have failed.

Speaking to radio Tamazuj earlier this week, Hamid Mohammad Bashar said previous agreements signed with the Rizeigat should be cancelled and a new agreement signed because the Rizeigat are not willing to implement the already signed agreements.

Bashar further said any mediation between the two communities should be based on a new agreement that should include matters of land ownership.

But members of Rizagat said they are committed to implement the signed peace deal.

For his part, Rizeigat Paramount Chief Mahmud Musa Madibo, said they are committed to implement the already signed agreements in Merowe, Mujlad and Um Haraz areas.

He called on the government to revitalize the resolutions of the peace deal to avoid tension between the two communities once again.

Madibo pointed out that both communities have agreed to resolve all their differences in Mujlad and promised to pay all compensation agreed upon before new clashes begun.
