LRA attacks in Raja reduce, citizens relieved

Citizens of Boro Medina, located in Raja County, did not suffer from attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army during this December’s holiday season. Last year, the Ugandan rebels of Joseph Kony crossed into South Sudan from Central Africa and attacked a village in Raja County in Western Bahr el Ghazal state. The chief of Boro Medina, Mohamed Ali, told Radio Tamazuj the people in the villages were surprised as they ‘were waiting to hear gunshots or reports about them’. The chief explained that citizens of Boro Media also expected to be attacked during the harvest season but were relieved that they could harvest their crops without any disturbances. He believes the reason for this year’s safety is that the army of South Sudan and other forces are ‘doing their job’ in fighting the LRA. In March this year, the African Union started to deploy a 5,000-strong military force (hyperlink) to Juba to hunt down Lord’s Resistance Army commander Joseph Kony. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, a citizen of Boro Medina referred to last year’s attacks, saying that he is grateful he can enjoy his harvest this year. He hopes the safety in his area will be maintained so that farmers can ‘do their work with hope’.  Related: AU deploys force to hunt down Kony (25 March 2012)
