Lou Nuer clashes kill two in Akobo

Interclan clashes between members of the Chieng Majoak and Chieng Tot subclans of the Lou Nuer left two people dead on Tuesday, according to local authorities in Akobo East County of the rebel Bieh State.

The two people killed are both men from Chieng Tot. One person from Chieng Majoak was injured.

Bieh State Deputy Governor Koang Rambang Chol said 20 arrests have been made and army units have deployed on the outskirts of Akobo town to look for suspects.

Akobo East County Commissioner Tut Chot Rial called for calm and said the authorities will take all measures to bring the culprits to justice.

Tut, speaking to relatives of the victims at a burial, said interclan conflict is one of the major problems facing Akobo East. He appealed to citizens to collectively work to solve the problem.

Bieh State is not a state recognized by South Sudan’s Transitional Constitution, but it was unilaterally declared by the SPLM-In Opposition which has controlled the area for more than a year.
