A 34-year-old man, Kuol Liah, was killed by a lorry transporting sorghum from Mangeet to Rubkona County of Unity State on Saturday, the traffic police said.
Domai Dak Kai, the police’s director of highway traffic in Unity State, told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend that the deceased was an assistant to the truck’s driver and was crushed by the vehicle as he tried to alight to remove logs placed in the road by suspected robbers.
“The incident happened when armed youth blocked the road between Mangeet and Rubkona with logs. The deceased alighted to remove the logs and it seems he saw the robbers and instead ran under the vehicle which crushed him,” he said. “At the same time, the robbers came out from the bushes and threatened the driver to stop and come out of the truck. The driver instead drove off after he was threatened by the criminals and the lorry crushed his assistant to death.”
Dak added: “The incident took place at 8:33 p.m.”
He said security personnel arrested the truck driver and that the vehicle was driven to the police headquarters in Bentiu for further investigation.
