A senior government official in South Sudan’s Lol State has unexpectedly resigned calling the government policies “divisive.”

Omer Ishag Mohammed, who serves as the state minister of information and spokesman, sent a letter of his resignation to Radio Tamazuj this evening saying he cannot serve a government that kills its people.

Omer, who has been a staunch supporter of Governor Rizig Zachariah, claimed the state government has been targeting innocent civilians for allegedly supporting the opposition.

He also accused his former boss of failing to unite the divided communities of Raja, Aweil North and Aweil West Counties.

The former government loyalist said the current administration lacks political will to make peace in the country saying a large number of people from his state fled to Central African Republic and Sudan due to the ongoing devastating civil war.

“Therefore, I have resigned from being part and parcel of this inhuman act,” he wrote.

Mr. Ishag had served in various government positions since the creation of Lol State by President Salva Kiir in October 2016.

He is also a former journalist.

Government officials in the town of Raja could not immediately be reached for comment.
