Lokiliri chief calls for evacuation of cattle to allow farming

The chief of Ngerjebe Boma of Lokiliri Payam in Central Equatoria State’s Juba County on Monday called on government authorities to help evacuate pastoralists and their cattle from the area to allow residents to resume farming, and so that children can go to school with ease in the new academic year.

Biafore Modesto Modi told Radio Tamazuj that a large group of herders and cattle invaded his area in September last year and destroyed seven farmlands. However, they did not fight with the civilians. He said the herders have now moved to Aru Junction in the same Payam where there is water.

“The situation is now fairly okay, I am now in the village, the cattle keepers came here and stayed in an area called Moyo Gali in Mao where they set up their cattle camp, right now they have all gone to Aru Junction since the day before yesterday and the last group left yesterday,” he explained. “In Aru Junction, there were no water sources but at the time they were constructing the road they ended up creating a water source from the mountain and that is where they settled. Initially, in my area up to Aru Junction, there were no water sources and now they are stationed at the foot of the mountain where there is water but now we do not know where they will be heading.”

Chief Modi added, “I am appealing to the government authorities that we, the chiefs, want schools to resume, we want to fight hunger in our area by farming, and we want them to intervene to return the cattle to their original areas.”
