Locusts destroy sorghum crop in Babanusa

Farmers in the countryside east of Babanusa, in southwestern Kordofan, report that locusts have eliminated the sorghum crop in the region.

Radio Tamazuj learnt from local sources that crops were wiped out in the area of Habal Al Wadi, including the farms Jaru, Sintaya, Al Bartiya and Tambul.

The competent authorities in Fula were reportedly informed of the coming crisis about a month before the crops were attacked by locusts and birds. These authorities in turn informed the Crop Protection Directorate in the federal ministry of agriculture.

According to the farmers, they were expecting a large crop due to good rains this year, before pests ruined their hopes. They held authorities in the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for the failure to send crop planes to spray the area, and demanded compensation for their losses.
