Stephen Mathiang, Commissioner of Alor County in Western Lakes State said he is deeply concerned about the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation for people in his county due to shortages of food caused by inaccessibility of roads.

Commissioner Mathiang told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that more than 30,000 civilians are in dire need of food especially women, children and the elderly who are mostly affected by lack of food.

Mathiang further said some food is available, but it is too expensive for citizens to afford because most of them have gone unpaid for nearly three months.

He pointed out that a sack of sorghum costs 8,000 SSP, a bag of sugar is 5,000 SSP, and a jerrican of cooking oil is sold at 3,000 SSP.

Mathiang called on humanitarian agencies to quickly provide aid to the vulnerable groups before their situation worsens.
