Local government reports food shortage in Duk County

Duk County Commissioner Jacob Akech says thousands of displaced people coming to his county from neighboring rebel-controlled areas of Ayod and Uror counties are without help.

He said new IDPs (internally displaced persons) are coming to Duk County and stationed at Ayuel and Poktap. He said over 25,000 IDPs from rebel-controlled areas are already in Duk County without basic needs.

“We have almost 10,000 IDPs in Poktap from Lou Nuer and 15,000 IDPS in Ayueldit from Ayod County that make up 25,000 IDPs currently in Duk and they need food, medicines,” he told Radio Tamazuj.

Akech stated, "As you know there are new arrivals every day – we need more food, clean water, medicines and other basics needs."

He said that they are working to locate the refugees to the highland areas of Payuel, Patuonoi and Padiet with the plan to choose two locations so that they are not affected when the rainy season comes.

He said the host communities are directed by the chiefs in the areas to say in peace with the new arrivals.
