A former governor of Jonglei State has underscored the need for peaceful coexistence among various communities in the state in order to achieve the desired development.

Philip Thon Leek, who now represents Duk County in the national legislative assembly, told Radio Tamazuj last week that his constituency has not witnessed any developmental projects since 2007 due to insecurity in the state.

The former governor reiterated the need for communities of the greater Jonglei state to live harmoniously for the sake of development, saying years of conflicts have left the region undeveloped.

“In Duk, there is no secondary school. There were only 11 primary schools, but later destroyed in 2013. All health facilities were also destroyed. These dilapidated infrastructures were built between 2005 and 2007. Since 2007, there has been no development,” said Leek.

He added, “Insecurity caused by inter-communal feuds in Jonglei and political turmoil which always starts in Juba has been the reasons for poor services.”

The lawmaker appealed to all communities of the greater Jonglei State to make peace in order to pave the way for development.

Communities of the greater Jonglei state have for long been wrangling leading to cattle raids and child abductions.
