A lightning strike during a storm last Tuesday knocked Radio Mayardit FM in Warrap State's Twic County off the air, the manager said.
Aguer Atem Barach told Radio Tamazuj that the strike destroyed the radio's transmitter, power generator among other equipment.
"What happened was the thunder strike which struck the station on Tuesday last week and it destroyed the power generator and transmitter. It was a terrible strike which shocked my staff who was at the station and the good thing was that nobody was harmed," Atem said.
Atem said the management is working to bring in new equipment to restore the radio station. "….and hopefully the radio will be on air next week," he added.
A regular listener, 45-year-old Maria Nyandeng Magem says they are missing out on the important information broadcast on the radio.
"We are suffering because we cannot get the information we used to get from the radio now. It used to inform us if someone needed a blood transfusion in the hospital and when a child without parents is admitted, the radio would announce and people come to the hospital, even lost children would be reunited with their families through the radio," she said.
James Anyong Manut, a regular contributor in the call-in shows on the radio says, "We miss greetings from friends, no entertainment and people are not updated about the floods, people are now in darkness."
