Two children were killed on Monday after a freak blast of lightning struck them during a heavy downpour in Mvolo County’s Yeri Payam in Western Equatoria State.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the deputy director of Yeri Payam, Peter Abui Henry, confirmed that the two children, aged 10 and 5, were struck by a bolt of lightning at their home while their parents were at church.
“It has not rained here for a long time and the elders, landowners and traditional leaders sat to discuss why there is no rain but immediately after the meeting ended, it started raining,” he explained. “Lightning hit the two children from one family and they died on the spot on Monday at 3 pm.”
