Peter Mayen Majondit the Chairman of the People’s Liberal Party said Thursday in Juba that Minister of Cabinet Affairs Martin Elia Lomuro is creating divisions trying to forcefully sign the peace agreement.
Mayen said Elia signing on behalf of opposition political parties “beats most people’s logic” because Elia is part of the government.
“If he signs on behalf of the political parties then there is no difference between the political parties and the government, they are all going to be the same because he is a minister in the government. That is why we are saying that whoever should sign on behalf of the political parties should not be party that is a member of the current government.”
Elia has previously tried to represent opposition parties during the IGAD peace process, but he was sent back to Juba by the mediators.
Mayen said Dr Lam Akol, the head of the SPLM-Democratic Change party who was prevented by the government from participating in the peace talks, should sign on behalf of the opposition parties.
“Lam has been heading the national alliance which compose of couple political parties and therefore we think it is really reasonable for Dr. Lam to sign on behalf of the political parties so that the interest of the political parties are kept independently as well as we see balance in terms of representation of the political parties,” Mayen said.
Mayen said if the political parties fail to sign the peace agreement there will be no government of national unity.
“Despite the fact that the two principals or the warring parties which are both SPLM having much more shares, but still the little share which has been allocated by IGAD to the political parties if the parties do not sign to the agreement then they do not get that percentage and therefore whatever government that will be formed will be a government of SPLM and then the other political parties will not participate,” he said.
