Leer official reports ‘dire’ humanitarian conditions

Peter Makuoth Malual, Information Minister in the proposed Southern Liech State says he is deeply concerned about the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation for civilians who are trapped in the conflict-hit State.

Makuoth told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that citizens are facing ‘dire’ humanitarian conditions due to continued fighting between government troops and opposition fighters in the area, besides the floods that hit the area during this year’s rainy season.

Makuoth, who is also the state government’s spokesman, pointed out that many people are currently sheltering inside the UN camp, saying the state is entirely cut off due to heavy rains and floods.

The local official called upon relief agencies to return to the area to provide aid assistance to more than 500,000 displaced people in Leer.

“The situation in the area is deteriorating, people cannot survive, so we call on all the humanitarian agencies to intervene to rescue the situation,” said Makuoth.
