Leadership, land main obstacles at Merowe peace meeting

A magistrate committee between the feuding Arab tribes Rizeigat and Ma’alia in Merowe town in Sudan's Northern State is still trying to bring viewpoints of the two sides closer, a tribal leader said.

Mohamed Issa Aliu, Chairman of the Shura Council of the Rizeigat Arab tribe in East Darfur state, told Radio Tamazuj that the two tribes have yet to reach an agreement during their peace summit.

Issa disclosed that the main obstacles now are two issues of land ownership and leadership.

“The Rizeigat tribe says the Ma’alia tribe doesn’t own any land in the area, then they have rights to be given nazir position, while the Ma’alia representatives claim land ownership, and they demand the nazir position in the area,” he said.

The traditional leader further said the committee is working tirelessly so that the two feuding tribes reach a peace agreement soon.

Last week, the peace committee was reportedly working out a draft agreement after it had received viewpoints of the two parties including the root cause of the conflict and its possible solutions.
