Lawyer hopes for release of detained UN journalist after peace implementation

The lawyer for arrested UN radio journalist George Livio, who has been held for more than a year without charge, says his client could be released when peace implementation starts.

Security agents arrested Livio in Wau without explanation on 22 August 2014 and have held him in Juba ever since.

"They don’t tell us about where he is being detained, so peace is the only hope, we don’t have something in our hands because they are political prisoners," attorney Monyluak Alor Kuol told Radio Tamazuj.

Monyluak predicted his client will be released during the implementation of the peace agreement because George is a political prisoner. He said the transitional government may not allow political arrests to continue.

The lawyer said he does not know George’s whereabouts, adding that lawyers in similar cases have try to refer the matter to courts but failed.
