A campaign to create awareness on the risk of landmines is being carried out in the contested area of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan.

The campaign teaches citizens how to recognise and reduce the risk of explosive landmines and other explosive remnants of war.

It is being organized by a Swedish and Danish organizations and carried out in Rumamer and other areas.

Ngol Dut, a protection officer for  the Swedish organization, said the campaign is a routine program for the safety of citizens especially children.

Dut further said conflict-affected areas need the programme so that the risk of explosive devices is avoided.

Abyei area previously witnessed military confrontations between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.
