Landmine explosion kills five people in South Kordofan

At least five people were killed and 19 others wounded in a landmine in Sudan’s South Kordofan State, according to Sudanese Red Crescent Society.

Among the dead in the explosion in Gadir Locality, about 25 km west of Abu Jubeiha, was a volunteer of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, Malik Ali al-Badawi.

Gadir Locality had also recently witnessed an attack on Karida village by gunmen who killed 19 people and wounded 27 others.

It is reported that at least some of those traveling to the area when the vehicle was attacked were intending to provide medical treatment to those wounded in the earlier attack on Karida village.

In its statement on Wednesday, the SSRC called on all parties involved in conflict to adhere to international laws that prohibit the use of land mines.

South Kordofan State has witnessed fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North since 2011.
