Land dispute leaves one dead in Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal

A dispute over land in Aweil West County of Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal state left one dead last weekend.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the commissioner of Aweil North County, Garang Kuach Ariath, explained that the problem was between two individuals residing in the area from different Dinka sub-clans.

“What had happened is that we received a phone call on Friday around 8.00am informing us of a land dispute between two people from Padhuny and Paduur sub-clans. Akech is from Paduur and Akook is from Padhuny. The dispute is about a plot which is lived on by Paduur but belongs to Padhuny because of remnants found on site,” Ariath stated.

According to the commissioner the plot was deserted during war time but wooden remnants such as pounding wood and a pounding stick have been found that prove the place was originally inhabited.

The official acknowledged that Chur Lual, from Paduur, was killed at the disputed plot. The perpetrator, Akech, was arrested and is now in jail.

The commissioner has appealed for the citizens of his county and of Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal in general to remain calm and to the leave the case to the government.

“So I would like to request that the people of Aweil, Paduur and Paduny leave the case of Akech and Chur in the hands of the government,” requested Ariath.
