The chairman of the party leading the opposition in South Sudan’s parliament says that they are conducting consultations with IGAD mediators to sign the compromise peace agreement.
The politician is head of the SPLM-DC opposition party and also leader of the Political Parties Leadership Forum (PPLF), an association of political parties.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Akol stated that the opposition parties under the umbrella of the Political Parties Leadership Forum (PPLF) are in consultation to join the peace agreement signed by the government and armed opposition in last August.
Previously, government security agents have blocked Lam Akol from traveling to peace talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Government-backed candidates have also challenged Lam Akol for the leadership of the PPLF.
In the interview, Lam Akol described the signed peace agreement in South Sudan as “unique”, stressing the international community’s support for the agreement.
The opposition leader noted also that the the government, armed opposition and SPLM-G10 all participated recently in meetings on the sideline of the the UN General Assembly in New York to push for implementation of the peace agreement.
