Lam Akol Ajawin, the Chairman of South Sudan’s opposition National Democratic Movement (NDM), has urged the international community to carry out an independent investigation into the recent events that took place in Wau town.

Eyewitnesses reported that government-aligned militia targeted local residents based on their ethnicity in residential areas during the latest upsurge in fighting in Wau town, nothwastern South Sudan.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, Akol said: “It is not a surprise to me, because the government has been committing crimes against human rights and the international law. The incident that took place in Wau is too bad, so it requires an independent investigation from the International community.”

The opposition leader further said the Juba government is trying to blindfold the international community by saying that investigations into the recent violence in Wau town are underway.

In 2012, South Sudan government formed a committee to investigate the 2012 events Wau town, where dozens of people were killed, but the report was not made public.
