South Sudan’s former minister of agriculture Lam Akol has announced a new faction called the National Democratic Movement to overthrow the government of President Salva Kiir.
It comes after rebel leader Riek Machar called on his supporters to wage war against the government of South Sudan, accusing Kiir of working to transform the country into a tribal nation.
In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Akol said he has been working through peaceful means, but Kiir has repeatedly violated the agreement. He said that President Kiir’s government does not understand any language except than the gun.
“It is clear that they believe in military. After the signing of the peace agreement and the arrival of the members of the armed opposition to Juba, the President has continued to violate the peace agreement starting by establishing 28 states instead of the 10 states and handed lands of other tribes to the Dinka,” Akol said.
Akol said he will not ally with the other armed groups to overthrow Kiir government until the people of South Sudan have peace.
