The chairman of South Sudan’s official opposition party described President Salva Kiir’s speech before signing the IGAD-Plus compromised agreement in Juba on Wednesday as “unfortunate.”
“Honestly, to my opinion, the address was unfortunate. He was supposed to deliver a better speech on that day. But the most important part is that he signed the peace. We hope he will commit himself to its implementation” Lam Akol told Radio Tamazuj in an interview Thursday.
SPLM-DC chairman Lam Akol did welcome the signing of the IGAD-Plus compromised peace agreement by President Kiir.
Akol accused Salva Kiir’s government of excluding political parties from signing the peace deal. However, the opposition leader said they welcome the agreement signed by President Kiir.
“The people of South Sudan are tired of war, they want peace, and if he is for peace we will stand with him,” he said.
Akol called on the government to implement the agreement and that the two warring parties should put the interest of the people of South Sudan on the top priorities.
President Kiir was reluctant citing serious reservations which need to be addressed by regional leaders. However, he signed the document.
