Lam Akol accuses Kiir, Taban of scrapping peace deal

Opposition leader Lam Akol said that the replacement of Riek Machar with Taban Deng as the First Vice President of South Sudan undermines the peace deal.

Opposition leader Lam Akol said that the replacement of Riek Machar with Taban Deng as the First Vice President of South Sudan undermines the peace deal.

“What is happening now in Juba is not the implementation of the peace agreement, but rather a clear violation of the peace agreement” Akol said in an interview with Radio Tamazuj. “The SPLM-IO Political Bureau comprises of 28 members, and four members only were the ones who did what happened in Juba, we cannot say it is the position of the armed opposition”

Akol, who is also minister of agriculture in the unit government, accused President Salva Kiir and his new First Vice President of dishonoring the peace agreement, and claimed that the two men have reached a secret deal to appointment a parliamentary speaker.

“There was a disagreement on the speaker, but (Deng) has accepted that Salva should appointment whoever he wants” said Akol.
