Ayen Meen Ador, the Acting Speaker of Lakes State Transitional Legislative Assembly, has called on members of the State parliament to utilize the three-month festive season recess to spread messages of peaceful coexistence in their respective constituencies. She made these remarks during the closing session marking the commencement of the three-month recess on Wednesday.
Ador, who also serves as the Deputy Speaker of the state assembly, clarified to Radio Tamazuj that the recess began on December 20 and will conclude on March 20 next year.
“My message to our community is that we need to have a peaceful Christmas time. Let’s celebrate Christmas in a peaceful manner,” she expressed.
She highlighted that during the preceding three months, the assembly had successfully passed several laws, including the Emoluments Act, Customary Law and Public Order, and the 2023-2024 budget. “Today, we break for recess, working for three months before taking this break, as per our mandate in this august house,” she explained.
She explained that during this three-month recess, members are encouraged to return to their constituencies, and women representatives can go back to their respective counties. “As members of the counties we come from, we will engage in Christmas festivals with our people. It is crucial that during the recess, members gather information from their constituencies. When the assembly reconvenes, they can present this information to address the needs and concerns of their constituents,” she stated.
“We have a mandate to represent our people and respect their will. During the recess, we go back and interact with the community in our counties,” she emphasized.
“We have worked on various laws since the revitalized agreement in 2022. If there is a break for recess, members are expected to return to their constituencies. Whether representing constituencies, women’s lists, or party lists, members should use this time to share messages of peace with their people,” she added.
