Lakes state: Galweng mobilized as community police

The commissioner of Rumbek Centre County is mobilizing the Galweng militia to restore order to South Sudan's Lakes state.

Mawet Manuer Khok said 70 Galweng youth will be recruited from cattle camps to serve as community police, reported Good News Radio.

Lawlessness in Lakes has spiraled in recent months with cattle rustling, revenge killings, and rapes.

Khok said the Galweng will be paid for their services.

Teachers salaries stolen

Separately, Lakes state director general for education Isaac Matiok Luk was suspended for abuse of office, Radio Miraya reported.

State education minister Dut Makoi Kuok said Matiok was stealing teachers’ salaries.

“We called a meeting of senior staff asking him to stop this but he did not,” said Makoi. “I gave him 45 days of forced leave and when the 45 days were finished I reported the matter to the governor and I told the governor that the best way is to suspend him.”
