Local authorities in South Sudan’s Lakes sate on Tuesday imposed 1,210 SSP as a residency fee for foreigners in the state, threatening imprisonment if they fail to pay.
A number of Sudanese traders told Radio Tamazuj that the authorities begun following foreigners in their shops since yesterday.
They pointed out that the new fee which is 300% higher than the previous fee.
“The authorities have requested all foreigners to pay 1,210 SSP as residency fee since yesterday. If you fail to pay you will end up in prison,” one trader said. “Not all foreigners can pay this money because there are some people who are working per day, but traders can pay.”
The decision comes a day after authorities imposed price fixing on market goods, a move rejected by many traders.
