Calm has returned to Rumbek Centre county in South Sudan’s Lakes state following last week’s attack in which dozens of houses were burned, an official said.

Lake state Minister of Youth, Culture, and Sport Wuol Agany Mabek told Radio Tamazuj that security forces have deployed to keep peace while an operation is underway in the area of the suspected attackers.

Wuol accused members of the Kuei community of attacking the Puok community, burning 74 houses at Cueicok village. He said the incident was revenge for an earlier attack on a Kuei religious site by Puok members.

The official said one elderly man is missing and one person was injured in last week’s attack.

Wuol said the state government has provided food and building materials to people who lost their homes. He said affected civilians have not fled the area but are living with neighbors whose homes are intact.

The Lakes caretaker governor visited the village shortly after the incident and appealed to local militia not to take revenge.
