The recently appointed chairperson of the Chamber of Commerce in Lakes State, Malok Marial Kuctiel, has vowed to revitalize agribusinesses and foster improved collaboration between traders and the state government.
Kuctiel made this commitment during his reception by the business community and government officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Lakes State on Thursday.
This announcement marks a significant turning point after two years of strained relations and misunderstandings between the Lakes State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture and the state government. Tensions had been exacerbated by allegations of government interference in business activities, particularly revenue collections within the Rumbek market.
In his address, Kuctiel expressed his gratitude to the outgoing chairperson, Lusadig Lukak, and Lakes State Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor for their roles in ensuring peace and security within the state.
Kuctiel emphasized his vision for the Chamber of Commerce, stating, “My administration’s primary goal is to create opportunities for business growth in the state. I will actively promote agribusiness and establish connections with international companies in South Sudan and the region. We will collaborate closely with both state and national governments to open up new markets for our business community. As the voice of the business community, we will advocate for all businesses, regardless of their size. Additionally, we will address transportation projects and legislation pertaining to the Lakes State Chamber of Commerce Act, which will provide essential guidelines and principles for our activities.”
He assured the business community of his accessibility, stating, “Whether you are a newcomer to our region or have been established here for decades, my office will always be open to support the business community in Lakes State.”
Riak Mayek Riak, Director General of the Lakes State Ministry of Trade and Industry, stressed the importance of cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, and the government. He underlined the need for a harmonious partnership to ensure the success of their respective programs and initiatives. Riak also revealed plans to issue a memorandum outlining the roles and functions of both entities to prevent duplication and overlap.
Offering advice to the new chairperson, Riak urged him to collaborate with the existing team and maintain cooperation. He emphasized that adherence to the law and the established system was crucial for the success of their endeavours.
Moses Dak Malou, Secretary General of Lakes State Traders Union (Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture), expressed optimism about the newly appointed chairperson’s potential to mend the strained relationship between traders and the government. He highlighted the lack of local citizens within the Rumbek market and the previous poor relationship between the Trader’s Union and the government. Malou believes that the new chairperson’s strong interpersonal skills could bring about positive change.
Jima Gar Maluac, Chairperson of Rumbek Central County Traders Union (Rumbek Central County Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture), expressed gratitude to the President of Traders in South Sudan and the Lakes State Governor for their support. He echoed Kuctiel’s call for local citizens to engage in business activities in Lakes State and emphasized the incoming chairperson’s commitment to overseeing the performance of small businesses.
