The Speaker of Lakes State’s parliament says that the governor has claimed ‘special powers’ to arrest members of parliament without first lifting their immunity as required by law.
Two members of the state parliament, Isaac Makur Buoc Apac and Marik Nanga Marik were arrested without charges in October. Speaker Baipath Majuec Relpuou has termed their detention at an unknown location as unlawful.
Speaking to Radio Miraya yesterday, the parliament leader described a conversation he had with Military Caretaker Governor Maj. Gen. Matur Chut Dhuol.
“I contacted the governor long time ago and asked him why he was arresting them when have immunity, but he said he had special powers to arrest. It is still not known where they are.”
