Lagawa citizens in S. Kordofan expect services after governors’ visit

Citizens from Lagawa in South Kordofan expect improvements in basic services such as water, education, health and roads, after a visit by the state governor Ahmed Harun who was accompanied by his counterpart from Khartoum State, Abdul Rahman Al-Khidir.

The two governors visited the area recently and, addressing a group of citizens, pledged to support the renovation of the hospital and construct better water systems in the area.

Similar high-profile visits by officials from Khartoum have been relatively frequently lately, especially after the fighting in the western part of the state around al-Fula and strikes led by Misseriya youth in the town of Babanusa.

Citizens told Radio Tamazuj that they blame the commissioner for failing in his responsibilities to provide the citizens with such services. “The area lacks water systems in addition to a scarcity of other sources,” one resident claimed. It also suffers poor healthcare services due to a shortage of medical staff, drugs and poor facilities in the local hospital.

However, the commissioner for Lagawa has claimed that his office received no funds from the Khartoum state governor or state government since the visit. Youth of the area replied with a written statement denouncing the commissioner’s position and accusing him of manipulating and ignoring the citizens’ needs.
