A Kuwaiti plane carrying 50 tons of medical and food assistance landed in Port Sudan on Tuesday, the Sudanese Ministry of Health has confirmed.
The consignment, which includes ambulances, was received by Kuwait’s Ambassador to Sudan, Fahad Al-Zafiri, and Khalil Mohamed Ibrahim, the Undersecretary at the Sudanese Ministry of Health among other officials and humanitarian workers.
During the event, Amb. Al-Zafiri also announced the resumption of operations of the Embassy of Kuwaiti in Port Sudan.
“The Kuwaiti airlift is loaded with medical assistance, food supplies, and equipped ambulance vehicles and came under the slogan ‘Kuwait stands by Sudan,’” he said. “Kuwait launched an airlift last year in May and was the first country to send an airlift carrying aid to Port Sudan Airport to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese.”
For his part, Khalil Mohamed Ibrahim, Undersecretary at the Sudanese Ministry of Health, lauded Kuwait for the aid.
“Today (Tuesday), we are receiving a plane from the sisterly state of Kuwait carrying medical aid estimated at 50 tons and more, including various medical devices and equipment, as well as some food, dates, and three ambulance vehicles,” he confirmed.
Mohamed said the airlift comes one year since war broke out in the country on 15 April 2023. He added that they also received a similar donation from Kuwait in May last year and thanked the Kuwaiti government and people for the gesture.
The official however said Sudan needs more aid to meet its estimated USD 50 million monthly budget for its medical sector.
Meanwhile, Sadiq Adam Ibrahim, the Acting General Commissioner of Humanitarian Aid, said the donation will support and enhance the health and humanitarian situation in Sudan.
