President Salva Kiir has called on the South Sudan political parties to prepare for elections at the end of the transitional period next year.
According to the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation (SSBC) on Tuesday, President Kiir said the parties should register to participate in the elections in December 2026.
“Elections are coming and that is the day you will be informed that go to cast your votes. We want to see our colleagues in other parties come out openly because some of them have not registered their parties up to now,” Kiir said.
South Sudan is expected to hold its first-ever General Election in December 2026 since independence in 2011. The elections have already been postponed several times due to a lack of proper preparedness and a shortfall in funds.
SPLM Deputy Chairman Daniel Awet Akot called for unity, both in the party and across South Sudan, to ensure sustainable peace and economic stability.
He stressed the need for the rule of law and for greater collaboration among the South Sudanese to secure sustainable peace
“We who have given all these orders, please let us stand with one heart,” he said.
SPLM Secretary General Peter Lam Both expressed appreciation for the continued support from the President, which he said, has enabled the party secretariat to manage its operation effectively.
“The SPLM is highly appreciative of your time to come here to share with us new tidings for the New Year. I want to recognize the directives that you gave to the economic sector last week to collect and allocate resources for the service delivery to our people in the right way,” Both said.
