South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir on Monday evening shuffled the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) officials in Western Equatoria, Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Upper Nile states.
In a decree broadcast on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Coporation (SSBC), Kiir removed ministers William Andiako Baiki from Finance and Planning, Isaac Morsali Tion from Information and Communication, and Bazia Tito Morisi from Public Service and Human Resource Development, in Western Equatoria.
He then appointed Bazia Tito Morisi to Finance and Planning, Elia Osini Donato to Information and Communication, and Isaac Morsali Timon to Public Service and Human Resource Development in the state.
In Western Equatoria, Kiir sacked Gabriel Mbolo Fedriano of Nagero County and replaced him with Henry Banga Hasaya.
In Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State, Kiir sacked Aweil West County Commissioner Garang Peter Maduok, and replaced him with Abuoi Akok.
In the state parliament, Kiir appointed Richard Kwac as a lawmaker to replace the late Martin Akol Bak.
In Upper Nile State, Kiir sacked Akiet Chol Lual as member of the HIV/Aids Commission and replaced him with Jolli Teng Jolli Lual.
Also in the state parliament in Upper Nile State, Kiir revoked the appointment of Akier Kuot Thon as a parliamentarian, with no replacement made.
President Kiir gave no reasons for the changes in the three states.
South Sudan is governed by a transitional government created after a 2018 peace agreement between President Salva Kiir, opposition leader Riek Machar and other political figures.
In September, the unity government approved a two-year extension of the transitional period.
The extension shifts the end of the transitional period under the 2018 revitalised agreement from February 2025 to February 2027 and moves the scheduled elections from December 2024 to December 2026.
