Kiir sacks four governors in partial governors’ reshuffle

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has issued presidential decrees sacking Western Lakes Governor John Deng Mamer and Aweil State Governor Jal Malith Jal.

Kiir also sacked Central Upper Nile Governor James Tor Monybuny and Northern Upper Nile Governor Awer Dau Agany. The decrees were read over South Sudan television on Monday night.

Separately, Kiir appointed Mahmoud Solomon Agok as the new governor of Western Lakes State.

In another decree, the president appointed Tong Akeen Ngor, to replace Jal Malith Jal. Kiir also appointed Peter Chol Wal as the new governor of Central Upper Nile State.

Thon Beny Thon was appointed as the new governor of Northern Upper Nile State.

There was no immediate reason given for the changes.

South Sudan's constitution gives Kiir the power to "remove a state governor and/or dissolve a state legislative assembly in the event of a crisis in the state that threatens national security and territorial integrity."
