A senior member of the SPLM faction loyal to President Kiir said the former political detainees are expected to return to Juba soon after the recent reconciliation mediated by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni to reunify the party.
The former detainees are a group of high level SPLM leaders who were arrested and released at the start of the South Sudan Civil War in December 2013 before going into exile in neighboring countries.
Bol Makueng told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday said that all issues raised in the Arusha Agreement have been addressed within the party’s constitution, while reiterating the government’s commitment to reunify the fragmented SPLM party.
He accused some foreign bodies of being responsible for the continued division within the SPLM party.
Dr. Majak D'Agoot, a member of the former political detainees, told Radio Tamazuj in an interview YESTERDAY that their meetings with a government delegation led by President Kiir in Entebbe focused on issues pertaining to reconciliation between leaders of the SPLM party.
Majak pointed out that it was President Salva Kiir who asked for a reconciliation with them. He confirmed that the two sides agreed to reconcile the fragmented SPLM factions for the sake of peace in the country.
“The reconciliation is important and it is the element that can move all the agreements ahead. We could not implement the Arusha agreement because the political will was lacking, so this reconciliation can renew the peace agreement. I can say that there is a common ground,” said Majak.
