27 trucks carrying relief items from South Sudan’s presidency arrived in Aweil State on Saturday, an official said.

The food items, procured from neighboring Sudan, are to assist the flood-affected victims in the greater Northern Bahr el Ghazal region.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the state information minister, Deng William confirmed that the first convoy of trucks arrived in Aweil town on Saturday.

He said donated foodstuffs will be distributed to the general public in the greater Northern Bahr el Ghazal states of Aweil, Lol and Aweil East.

“These are donations from the president based on the disaster [floods] that happened in June and August,” Deng explained.

The government is yet to announce the time for distribution of the donated food items.

According to humanitarian organizations, nearly one million people have been drastically affected by flash floods following unprecedented rainfall in many parts of South Sudan.

Late last month, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir declared a state of emergency in the flood-affected areas.
