Kiir’s fact-finding committee arrives in Yei to probe insecurity situation

A high-level fact-finding committee set up by President Salva Kiir to probe rampant insecurity, targeted killings and massive displacement of civilians in Yei River State arrived in the area on Saturday, a local official said.

The committee which comprised of members of council of states, national parliament and security officers is co-chaired by the presidential advisor on special affairs Clement Wani Konga and presidential advisor on political affairs Daniel Awet Akot.

Stephen Lado Onesmo, Information Minister in Yei River State, said that the two presidential advisors and their team are scheduled to meet with security organs, members of state parliament, religious leaders, and traditional leaders in Yei. He added that the national government delegation is also expected to hold a public rally at the Yei Freedom Square on Monday morning.

“The message is that the head of the delegation Wani Konga has arrived in Yei, and he is expected to meet the leadership of the state, security organs, members of parliament, chiefs and later hold a public rally at the freedom square for the public to express their views and hear a message sent by President Salva Kiir to the people of Yei,”said Lado.

The state minister pointed out that the visiting fact-finding committee will investigate the root cause of the ongoing conflict in order to find amicable approaches to the problem in the state.

“Konga will also take the grievances of the people of Yei to the President, the first priority of the government is dialogue and peaceful means to resolve the conflict,” he said.
