South Sudanese President Salva Kiir returned home on Thursday evening after a brief visit to Uganda where he met President Yoweri Museveni.
First Vice President Taban Deng Gai was among senior government officials who received President Kiir at the airport.
South Sudan’s peace process topped the agenda during the discussions between President Kiir and his host.
Foreign Minister Nhial Deng Nhial said in a statement that the two leaders discussed a range of issues including the peace process. He added that President Salva briefed his Ugandan counterpart on the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
According to Nhial, President Kiir said his government will ensure that the implementation of the peace agreement is expedited to establish a new government in May.
Kiir was accompanied by foreign minister, Nhial Deng Nhial, minister in the office of the president, Mayiik Ayii Deng, minister of trade and industry, Paul Mayom and other senior government officials.
The September 2018 peace accord signed by President Kiir and several opposition groups provides for a new unity government in May 2019 before elections three years later.
However, much remains to be accomplished before a transitional government is formed.
