South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has appointed Mr Ramadan Mohamed Abdallah Goc as the new deputy foreign minister.

The president made the announcement in a live broadcast on state television in Juba on Thursday night.

Ramadan replaces Deng Dau Deng Malek who was unexpectedly fired by President Kiir in a decree last week.

SPLM cadre

Ramadan Mohamed Abdulla had previously served in the ruling SPLM party secretariat in Juba as secretary for information after South Sudan’s independence.

He had also served as secretary for training, research and planning at the SPLM northern sector secretariat before South Sudan’s independence from Sudan.

Ramadan is currently a lecturer at the University of Bahr el Ghazal, one of the public universities in South Sudan.

According to the 2018 peace agreement, the role of the deputy foreign minister should be selected by the SPLM Party of President Salva Kiir.

South Sudan was meant to conclude a transition period with elections in February 2023, but the transitional government failed to meet key provisions of the agreement, including drafting a constitution.

The parties to the agreement extended the transitional government’s time in office for another two years, meaning elections would be held in December 2024.
